Private Healthcare: The Facts

With the NHS providing free, public healthcare for so many decades, some people might say that private healthcare is unnecessary. In reality, just knowing a few basic facts about all that private healthcare can offer you can prove just how important it is.

Wait times with the NHS are currently the longest on record

October 2022 saw a record high of almost 7.21 million people waiting for treatment, with 2.91 million patients waiting over 18 weeks and 410,983 patients waiting over a year.

The choice is in your hands

With private healthcare, you have the option to choose a surgeon and hospital to suit your time and place, which isn’t possible on the NHS. You can even elect to receive your care in a private room.

More people than ever are waiting for treatment

In 2011/12, it was reported that only 5.2% of patients attending major hospital A&E departments spent more than 4 hours in the department, including wait times. By 2019/20, this had risen to 24.7%.

Increasing numbers of Brits are turning to PMI for healthcare

The Office for National Statistics claims that 1 in 8 (13%) of adults reported paying for private medical care in 2021-22 because of NHS wait times, with 5% using private insurance and 7% paying for the treatment themselves.

A wider range of available treatments

Specialist drugs and treatments that aren’t offered by the NHS (for any reason, including because of their expense, or a lack of approval by NICE) are accessible through private healthcare.
